The Academic system

Academic institutions function differently from universities in the United States. The specifics vary from one institution to another. You may encounter differences in things like how Add/Drop works, how assignments graded and weighted, how professors interact with students, how placement tests work, how tests are weighted in the final grade, etc.  We've provided information below to help to get students prepare for the different academic experiences they will have on CIS Abroad's programs.

Universidad Veritas

Universidad Veritas Campus Biomol

Learning Method

courses in different areas with a competency-based learning methodology, with a strong focus on experiential learning to add hands-on. Most of the courses won't have regular tests but essays or presentations instead.

Add / Drops

The Add/Drop period ends on Wednesday of the first week of your program. No changes will be made past this date.

Class Schedules and Location

During your first day at Veritas University students will be given a tour of the campus so they can find their way around. In the students  Canvas account they can find class schedules and class numbers, as well as assignments and grades for each course.

Transcripts

Veritas provides a hard copy which is mailed to CIS Abroad office about 6-9 weeks after your departure. It will be in English with the grade system translation and the amount of hours per course. CIS will mail it directly to your US institutions with a table for translations.

Please note that your transcript won't be released until your CIS Abroad invoice is paid in full.

Student Support

You can schedule an appointment with Veritas Academic Coordinator, Pamela Badilla, if you need academic support: pbadilla@veritas.cr, or you can ask your site director for information on resources they have available.

Service Learning

Students can participate in the Veritas Biomol Service learning, where they can learn about shark and stingray conservation efforts in Costa Rica, work in the bio-molecular laboratory and participate in field work, and receive an extra credit hour. Ask your site director Lisa Pinheiro for information, or contact Veritas Academic Coordinator Pamela Badilla:  pbadilla@veritas.cr

Extra Curricular Activities

Veritas University has a wide range of extra curricular activities for students to participate in, including free dance lessons and cooking classes, as well as opportunities to meet the local students.
